Project Feature: Edge House

Nestled in the secluded and panoramic suburb of Dover Heights, Edge House is a breathtaking and bespoke home that combines the very best of modern design and luxury living.

As the name suggests, the home is perched at the top of an 80 metre cliff and offers sweeping views of the ocean and the city skyline.

This major alterations and addition project saw the Stratti Building team turn a cramped and dark home into an entertainer’s dream. Featuring a spacious open-plan design, the home boasts 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and huge outdoor living spaces, which capitalise on both city views and ocean vistas – in fact, the construction team regularly saw whales during the build!

The Brief

Our clients wanted a home that would support their love of entertaining, which meant spacious and open plan living spaces were absolutely essential. The original home had many small rooms and a large structural wall separating the ground floor, which made the space feel dark and cramped. On the second storey, the bedrooms were dimly-lit and enclosed.

To achieve our client’s vision, the Stratti team undertook major structural changes to completely transform and reconfigure the home’s interior and exterior, without harming the original structure. To make these major changes and give the interiors an incredible finish, we paired with Sydney drafting team Precision Planning and our clients engaged interior design firm Hare + Klein.

The Challenges

We faced many challenges in this project, including the COVID-19 pandemic, however we’re proud to say that we built this incredible home in just 10 months and with no delays. This was achieved through meticulous planning and impeccable foresight. We anticipated challenges and made sure the vast number of suppliers’ products were ordered and organised ahead of schedule.

As there was no architect involved in this project, much of the home’s finer details and problem-solving fell to the Stratti Building team. Our exceptional foreman Ash rose to this challenge and was proactive in helping the extended team stay on track and overcome any structural issues.

As the property was located on a sand bed on top of a cliff, excavation proved difficult and had to take place by hand. The home’s position also was at risk of weathering due to extreme exposure to salt, so we removed all the peeling render on the existing house and replaced it with an acrylic texture coat system that would withstand the elements for many years to come.

The Results

When you enter the home, you’ll immediately be greeted by a highly-sought after mirror by Ettore Sottsass – an iconic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the house.

Edge House is all about texture and shapes. Stunning polished concrete floors extend throughout the house, and an abundance of luxurious natural stone feature in the kitchen and bathroom spaces. Elsewhere, stucco and Marrakesh plastering helps create dynamic and unique surfaces.

To balance out these bold and sharp materials, curved and textured surfaces feature prominently through the home, including in the kitchen island, fireplace and dining table.

Elsewhere, 1970s-style purple velvet couches and a textured banquette soften the space and add a pop of colour.

The large outdoor area offers incredible views of the ocean and features an in-ground pool and pizza oven with concrete bar and built-in ice bucket.

This project would not have been possible without the help of our incredible partners, suppliers, tradespeople and clients. We are extremely grateful to everyone who played a part in bringing Edge House to life.
